Just like dental check-ups, routine hygiene or scale & polish appointments are important in keeping our teeth and gums healthy. Regular cleanings also remove teeth stains caused by tobacco and dietary stains (coffee, tea, or soda).
Proper oral hygiene is key to good oral health. However, there are some areas in the mouth that are difficult, if not impossible, to clean by brushing alone. The buildup of plaque is a major risk factor for gum disease and cavities.
We recommend dental cleanings for adults and children every six months. Patients wearing braces, heavy smokers, or those with uncontrolled diabetes may require more frequent visits.
When bacteria and tartar (hardened plaque) build up and form periodontal “pockets” between your teeth and gums, your dentist may recommend getting a deep clean.
Also called scaling & root planing, a deep clean is specifically carried out to treat gum disease. It takes more than one appointment and is made to remove plaque and toxins from the teeth, the pockets, as well as below the gum line. When left untreated, gum disease worsens and can eventually lead to tooth loss.
A deep clean can help reverse the course of gum disease and restore your oral health.
